Startup Watch: Turkey’s Online Gaming Star “Peak Games”

While the US-based online game company Zynga is rumored to be preparing for an IPO, after receiving a reported USD 180M in capital from the Russian VC firm Digital Sky Technologies (DST) back in 2009, Turkey’s own Peak Games (founded in October 2010) just raised another round of capital, estimated to be valued at approximately USD 5M, with a business plan focused on continued expansion of its online gaming portfolio into other emerging markets. Peak Games has more than 10 million monthly active users on Facebook – and over 2M people playing the company’s games each day – playing largely traditional Turkish and Arabic card and board games. They are targeting their games not only within Turkey, but also across the Middle East and North Africa – with its eyes on more markets in the future, including Brazil. In the words of their Istanbul-based CEO, Sidar Sahin, “We believe the next big Facebook games will come from an emerging market.”
